The Artist's Garret Featured in Chatham County Line

Need begets a local
creative venture
By Deborah R. Meyer
December issue of Chatham County Line

When the economy tanked, few escaped unscathed. Fearrington
residents Carol-Ann and Forrest Greenslade were not among
those lucky few.
“My 401K got kind of burned up, and my wife’s real estate
business slowed down,” Greenslade said. “We were starting to
wonder if our money would run out before we die.”
The couple started thinking about ways to supplement their
income including renting out the small apartment attached
to their home. It was where Greenslade wrote and created his
artwork.
“But I had reservations about full-time tenants. We had
owned a building once, and it was the worst experience of my
life,” Greenslade said.
Then one morning in late 2013, the Greenslades saw a news
show about small businesses. The focus of the show was the
shared economy, and it talked about some young men who,
though they were college graduates, could not pay their living
expenses. They got air mattresses and put them in their spare
room to rent out to tourists. The men went on to found the
Airbnb website that is now in use world-wide. “I started reading
Forbes and other business magazines about this, and the more
I read, the more I thought this was a good fit,” Greenslade said.
The Greenslades checked with their neighbors to make
sure that they would not be uncomfortable with them turning
his studio into a place where visitors could stay. Then
they got to work fixing up the space. The walls are covered
with Greenslade’s paintings and a bookshelf at the top of the
entry stairs is filled with his sculptures and some of his artist
daughter’s too. There is a hand-painted dining room table and
chairs next to the small but fully-functioning kitchen, a writing
desk, and sitting chairs for lounging. A set of cupboards
holds towels as well as books for visitors to use during their
visit. Brochures about local attractions are provided, and
Greenslade tells them about the vibrant, local art scene
and the Fearrington nature trails.
“We had our first guest in May of 2014,”
Greenslade said. Since then, the Artist Garret
has been booked about once a month, with
guests typically staying for a few days. Usually
they have come to town for family-related
events, such as a graduation. One couple came
to stay to be near a family member who was
in the last days of his life. To greet each new
guest, the Greenslades stock the studio with a
chilled bottle of Prosecco, cheese and biscuits,
and a bouquet of flowers from their sculpturefilled
garden.
“What has been surprising is how wonderful
people have been,” Greenslade said. “I
kind of thought it would be something I would
have to live through for financial reasons but
it has turned out to be a joy. It also gives me
another opportunity to show my work to a
broader geographical audience.”
Greenslade said that the Airbnb website
takes care of all the financial aspects of this
venture. “They take three percent from us and
six percent from the visitor for use of their
platform. The day after the guest arrives, there
is a wire transfer into our bank account. It
works perfectly for us,” Greenslade said. “We
have now met a lot of people around here who
have used Airbnb when they travel.”
This kind of shared economy is very democratizing
said Greenslade. “You don’t have to be
a Paris Hilton to be in the hospitality business
or have a music contract to publish your CD.
Technology has made a whole world accessible
to the average person if they will just learn
how to use it,” Greenslade said

My husband and I rented this lovely one bedroom apartment while visiting my father who lives in assisted living at The Arbor, Galloway Ridge. We really loved the bright, airy rooms and high ceilings. The little kitchen was well stocked with juice, coffee and granola bars - perfect for our first breakfast. The apartment was spotless and very nicely decorated, including many pieces of the owner's art. The hosts could not have been nicer - they were welcoming and very helpful with whatever we needed. They have a beautiful garden which is a joy to walk in and a wonderful hiking/running path behind the house which was an extra delight. The restaurants and shops at the Village at Fearrington are an easy walk from the apartment along with several nice walking paths around the pretty Fearrington grounds. This is very centrally located to both Pittsboro and Chapel Hill and an easy drive to Raleigh. We would highly recommend this apartment for couples visiting the area.

Eszter from San Diego reviews The Artist's Garret

My fiance, Kurt, and I stayed at The Artist's Garret in May of 2014, and it was exactly what we needed! I was visiting my family after my mom's hip replacement surgery, and we wanted a place that would be quiet, comfortable, and a true sanctuary. The Garret totally delivered! It's private and peaceful, well-appointed, and filled with wonderful & whimsical works of art. Forrest and Carol-Ann were thoughtful & gracious hosts, leaving us aromatic magnolia blossoms and refilling the coffee supply when we ran out! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this spot to anyone traveling to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area.

Guest review

We enjoyed our stay at the Artist's Garret at Fearrington. There are miles of lovely wooded walking paths nearby, and it takes only about 15 minutes to drive to Chapel Hill or to Pittsboro. The apartment over Forrest's garage sculpture studio is clean and light, and was stocked with drinks, snacks, and a nice bottle of wine. Forrest and Carol Ann were friendly and uncomplaining about my very late night arrival caused by a delayed flight, and were happy to provide anything that we needed, including fresh pastry and strawberries on the first morning.

Fearrington Village, North Carolina is a lovely rural community, just eight miles south of Chapel Hill. Over 50 visual artists live and create in Fearrington. Nature-inspired painter and sculptor, Dr. Forrest Greenslade has his Organic Forrestry Studio and Forrest Dweller Sculpture Garden in Fearrington Village

The Artist’s Garret BNB, just above Forrest’s studio, is a comfortable apartment with gallery sitting room, full kitchen, bedroom, and bath, all decorated with Greenslade’s art. After parking in a private space, you will be greeted with fresh flowers from the garden and some unique North Carolina treats. Take a few moments to enjoy some of Forrest’s sculpture in the front yard or paintings in the Greenslade’s home gallery. Forrest will be happy to give you a personal tour. We can also arrange for you to visit other Artist Studios at Fearrington Village.

The BNB is in a separate building over the studio. The sunny BNB kitchen has new granite counters with stainless sink, refrigerator and freezer, well stocked Keurig coffee maker, microwave, toaster, range and dishwasher. You can enjoy a snack or meal at Aunt Addie’s antique maple dinette, recently decorated by local artist friend Kate Ladd. Make your breakfast here, or go to the Dancing Goat in the Fearrington Village Center. The large gallery sitting room is filled with light, right up to the cathedral ceilings. A colorful rug that Forrest’s wife Carol-Ann dragged from Tunisia, dresses up the newly refinished parquet wood floors. You can sit in the comfortable leather chair, and put your feet up on the matching hassock, or use the wifi at the partner’s desk, on which Forrest wrote his PhD thesis nearly 50 years ago.

The cozy bedroom has a new queen sized bed. The room is decorated with keepsakes and childhood works by daughter-artist Kathryn Greenslade Armstrong. Watch some cable TV, do some reading, and get a good night’s sleep. Just off the full bath, is a walk-in closet and library.

Enjoy the sculpture garden. Take a long walk on one of the community trails that adjoins the Greenslade garden, which is a National Wildlife Federation certified wildlife habitat. The garden has been featured in Carolina Gardener Magazine.

The Artist’s Garret BNB is a quick walk to the Fearrington Village Center, with incredible gardens, gourmet restaurants, a first-rate independent bookstore, spa, and charming shops. In warm weather, there is a wonderful outdoor beer garden featuring local musicians.
